Social media is a great way to engage with your customers, but how do you begin to build a following? No matter how carefully-crafted your posts are, you won’t see results if you have no audience. As you build a social media strategy, keep in mind that you want to both build your audience while catering to your current followers. These strategies will help you bring in a new audience:
1. Build your profiles across platforms.
Reinforcement can be key in building your audience. Present a unified brand across all of your channels, and be consistent with the theme. Be sure to fill out the bio with company information, and have a similar profile and header images across the board. Even if a user doesn’t follow you the first time they come across your posts, the brand reinforcement each time they do will create a recognizable company in their mind, making them more likely to follow at some point.
2. Work with influencers.
Influencers are a guaranteed way to build your audience. By giving their honest opinion of your company, their followers will trust and be inclined to engage with you. Choosing the right influencer that aligns with your brand can bring great results! You can offer giveaways for their followers, or include a unique promo code just for them.

3. Don’t be afraid of paid social advertising!
Paying to boost your posts on different platforms will help you reach more people before building a sizeable audience. Promoted posts can double as an advertisement for your products and a plug for your social accounts, allowing users to choose how they want to engage with you. Promoted posts can cost as little as a few dollars, so don’t miss out on this chance to grow your audience!
Here are some of the different types of Facebook advertisements you can do on the site depending on what your goals are.
4. Offer special promotions to your followers.
Many users follow brands specifically to get information on special deals and offers. By giving exclusive discounts to your followers, you’ll both grow and retain your current audience. You can also host giveaways to show your appreciation and promote your brand further!
5. Post often, and post consistently.
It’s great to post every day for a week, but if you then disappear for a month, you won’t grow your audience. Create a posting schedule that is both effective and maintainable! You should aim to grow your audience organically and consistently over time, and don’t expect to go viral overnight. With consistent posting, your audience will look forward to your posts and begin to trust your reliability.
These days there are a number of different types of posts you can do depending on what you are trying to accomplish.
6. Don’t forget to promote your platforms!
Make sure to utilize your different channels to promote yourself. Have social media links on your blog, in your bio, and at the end of emails. If you do a post on one channel, link to it from another. You want to make it as easy as possible for followers on any one platform to find you on another, and make sure they’re aware that they can find more great content on another site!
7. Follow and engage with other brands.
By becoming a part of others’ audiences, you can also build your own. Follow accounts related to your industry and influencers that align with your brand, then interact with their posts. Not only does this open potential doors for working together, but you may draw in an audience who is looking for similar content.
8. Don’t underestimate in-person social promotion.
Promote your social media in-store, on business cards, or at events. After interacting in-person, a customer may be more interested in following your social media to keep up with the company. Try to make it as easy as possible to find your accounts by having cohesive usernames across platforms, and make sure your company comes up easily when searched.
9. Focus on content quality!
We all know that quality over quantity makes a great rule of thumb – are you following it on your social media accounts? Posting one great Instagram photo with a funny or meaningful caption will be much more effective than ten thoughtless pictures. Posting a lot doesn’t lead to a lot of followers, especially if the content is not unique or relatable.
